Returning Student Finds Inspiration in Education
Dana Anat is not a typical college student. She had almost 10 years of professional work experience before becoming a full-time student. However, like many students, she is motivated to complete her degree and make an impact on our community.
Anat began college at UNLV in 1997, but soon began a career with an airline that gave her the opportunity to travel all over the world. However, after several years, she found that although her job was fulfilling, it wasn't challenging anymore and she wanted to return to school to finish her bachelor's degree.
Anat received a scholarship for re-entry students to attend UNLV. The Osher Reentry Scholarship provides funds secured through the UNLV Foundation to students who have had a gap of five or more years in their undergraduate education. The Bernard Osher Foundation provided a $1 million endowment for the scholarship in December 2007.
"The scholarship means a lot to me," said Anat. "The financial support helps, especially as an adult student who is used to the income from a professional job."
Anat recognizes that there is also value in the scholarship beyond the financial benefits. "I also think this scholarship is important because it recognizes and rewards those who return to school, and it encourages me to do well," said Anat.
The Jean Nidetch Women's Center manages the scholarship process and works with the students who are selected to help them as they pursue their college educations. Liz Baldizan, director of the Jean Nidetch Women's Center believes that the scholarship is important to this population of students.
"The Osher Reentry Scholarship is such a timely and meaningful opportunity for a population that returns to their academic career with an excitement and a dedication," said Baldizan.
Returning to UNLV now, Anat feels more prepared for her college education. "I appreciate it so much more now than I think I would have back then," said Anat. She says that her life experience and maturity now help her to gain more from the classroom knowledge.
Although she originally began as an architecture major, her career path and life experience drew her in a different direction. She says a professor she had at a community college inspired her to pursue political science.
"In today's society, I recognize that politics affects me and everyone else," said Anat. "I hope that not only will I be a better professional, but a better citizen too."
Anat plans to go to law school when she graduates and hopes she can stay in Las Vegas and attend the UNLV Boyd School of Law. She wants to focus on policy, and is especially interested in environmental policy and environmental law. Anat hopes to work in Southern Nevada to help to preserve our natural resources.
"Going back to school is a big change after living in the professional world. It hasn't been easy for me, but the rewards definitely outweigh the sacrifices," said Anat.
