Student Athlete Excels at His Goals
For soccer player Danny Cruz, an education at UNLV was the perfect fit for his academic and athletic ambitions. As a member of the UNLV Men's Soccer Team and a recipient of an athletic scholarship, Cruz is able to focus on his university experience and make the most of his academic and athletic abilities.
Cruz, originally from Arizona, chose UNLV after visiting the campus. "I really loved the environment and the gorgeous campus," said Cruz. "It was all around the perfect place for me."
After completing his freshman year at UNLV, Cruz has been successful in both academics and athletics. He was chosen for the U.S. Men's Under-20 National Soccer Team, and earned many conference honors at UNLV. He also excels in his major, criminal justice, and maintains a high grade point average.
"Every professor I've had, I've absolutely loved," said Cruz, noting that he has appreciated the quality of the coursework and the dedication of the UNLV faculty.
Cruz has worked hard to get where he is today. As the first in his family to go to college, he is proud to be able to attend UNLV on an athletic scholarship.
"If it weren't for the scholarship, I don't think I would be in school now. I've been blessed to not have to worry about the money for school," said Cruz. "It's gotten me where I am today."
Mario Sanchez, coach of the UNLV men's soccer team says that scholarships are valuable for the students not only to ease the financial burden, but to also help students achieve their goals.
"Athletic scholarships allow students to pursue their dreams both academically and athletically," said Sanchez. "They also help to bring positive, hard-working individuals into the university community and the local community."
Cruz is enjoying his time on the soccer team and is motivated to improve academically and athletically because of the team support.
"This is one of the nicest places to play," said Cruz of the UNLV program. "It gives me an environment to play well and improve. I'm always learning something new and enjoy being part of this team."
