The William S. Boyd School of Law is Nevada's only law school. This highly regarded program, catalyzed by the philanthropic support of several of Las Vegas' great legal and business leaders, was granted full accreditation by the American Bar Association in February 2003 and granted membership in the Association of American Law Schools in January 2004.
As part of the university's comprehensive campaign, the William S. Boyd School of Law has identified the following key fundraising priorities:
Lawyering Process Program
As part of their coursework, students must complete three semesters of the lawyering process program. Private gifts will provide research materials, including law journals and databases, and support writing center staffing needs.
Saltman Center for Conflict Resolution
The Saltman Center for Conflict Resolution hosts scholarly presentations and other special events on such topics as theories of conflict, substantive analysis of specific conflicts that affect the public interestes, and methods of conflict avoidance and resolution. In addition, a practice component provides hands-on experience to law students.
Community service program
As part of the law degree program, students participate in a structured community service program. Working with Clark County Legal Services and Nevada Legal Services, teams of students prepare and conduct weekly workshops on basic procedures in family or small claims court and on bankruptcy, guardianship, and paternity/custody law. Private support helps fund this community outreach, and offers students the chance to assist groups of people in a general way without giving specific legal advice.
Thomas & Mack Legal Clinic
Opened in 2000, the innovative interdisciplinary Thomas & Mack Legal Clinic give student attorneys the chance to work under faculty supervision with UNLV graduate social work, education, and psychology students to provide high-quality representation to children, youths, and adults in trouble.
Faculty opportunity fund
Support for faculty research; teaching; and curriculum, professional, and administrative development directly affects the diversity and quality of teaching our students receive, both inside and outside the classroom. This program also provides support to help the Boyd School of Law recruit and retain outstanding faculty, especially those who are specialists in areas where few qualified candidates are available nationally.
Student scholarships
Annual tuition for law students is greater than with most other doctoral programs. As students must carefully concentrate on their studies, privately funded scholarships greatly ease financial obligations incurred during the three-year program. Donors may designate the general requirements for awards.
Advising center
The Center for Academic Success and Enrichment (CASE) is a component of the law school's academic success program. Selected students have been trained by the faculty to facilitate learning and academic success in law school, and the program hosts workshops and presentations throughout the academic year to assist students with class preparation, outlining, and general exam-taking skills, including practice exams. Private support will ensure students' successes academically and in their professional careers.
"Invent the Future"
Major support for the school will create endless opportunities for tomorrow's business and legal leaders. In honor of a significant gift, a donor may name endowed faculty chairs, professorships, or scholarships.
