The Office of Research and Graduate Studies is committed to creating a campus environment that supports and promotes the performance of superior research and innovative scholarly pursuits. The division is dedicated to helping university faculty, staff, and students continue building UNLV's reputation as a nationally recognized research institution.
Centers, institutes, and labs
Private funding will support university centers, institutes, labs, and museums conducting research and scholarly activity in given academic areas or closely related disciplines. These entities are often the vehicles for interdisciplinary research involving more than one department, college, school, or other university program.
Faculty and student research awards
Support will help UNLV faculty and students with special funding to conduct research and scholarly activity. These awards include the New Investigator Award for faculty early in their careers endeavoring to establish research expertise in a given area; the Stimulation, Implementation, Transition, and Enhancement Award, designed to encourage faculty to expand their research and creative activity in new directions; and undergraduate research awards created to support undergraduate students participating in research.
Center for Innovation and Economic Development
Private support for the center provides for commercialization of university-developed intellectual property, including patents, trademarks, and copyrights. The center creates an environment where faculty and students work directly with community patent attorneys in a facility where entities such as the Nevada Development Authority (NDA), Technology Ventures Corporation (TVC), the Technology Business Alliance of Nevada (TBAN), the Nevada Technology Council (NTC), and others are collocated to develop more efficient and effective development of university partnerships with the private sector to stimulate and diversify the state's economy.
Shadow Lane Campus biotechnology center and research complex completion
Support for UNLV's first regional campus will assist with the completion of biomedical research laboratories at the Shadow Lane Campus.
Matching dollars for federal research grants
Some federal research grants require that universities supplement the funding provided with matching dollars. Private funds will help faculty researchers meet this requirement.
Research laboratories
Additional funding will augment facilities in the new Science, Engineering and Technology Building and other UNLV research facilities where laboratories must be built and equipped. Additionally, many existing laboratories on campus are only partially completed, requiring renovation or additional equipment to become fully operational.
Endowed chairs and professorships
Academic departments campus-wide seek funding necessary to recruit and hire highly regarded, senior-level research faculty for endowed chairs or professorships.
Graduate student fellowships
Private support will fund the President's Graduate Research Fellowship Program, which provides doctoral students with financial assistance while they finalize their research and write their dissertations. This kind of support enables doctoral students to focus on their studies rather than pursue outside employment. Currently, only four annual fellowships are offered.
